Moon Pies are a southern snack tradition that started in Tennessee in the early 1930's. Consisting of graham crackers sandwiching marshmallow fluff and coated in various flavors, Moon Pies were a rare treat for this New York boy growing up. My favorite was the “chocolate” coated Moon Pie. While the quality of the chocolate may be suspect and I no longer care for them as I did, my son recently got to try his first Moon Pie, a chocolate double-decker, with an extra graham cracker and additional fluff. I'm afraid that Moon Pies will be only a rare treat for that New York boy too.
