Applewood charcoal from Bowman Orchards at the Saratoga Springs Farmers Market should make an interesting ingredient when charcoal grilling. I plan to use some tomorrow to grill skirt steaks. The price is not cheap $10 for a 10 pound bag, but if it is able to impart some nice applewood smoke elements to the meat, it will have been worth it.

Was it worth it?

I would say yes, Marco. The smoke is strong and adds a distinctive flavor to the meal similar to what mesquite does. For that reason though, I intend to use it sparingly and occassionally rather than exclusively. Given how good apple-wood smoked bacon is, I can't wait to use it for pork chops or tenderloin.

Yes, sparingly and occassionally. Most people pour it on. We love Oscar's applewood smoked bacon.
